It truly is amazing what the Internet has done to our lives. I honestly believe we’ve barely scratched the surface of what this technology can and will do in the future.

Take for example social bookmarking places like MySpace and Facebook. Suppose you had some strange characteristic like for example, you like to collect skunks (in reality toy ones). I actually know a lady whose entire home is filled with hundreds of small porcelain, plastic and stuffed Toy skunks. Her friends send her gifts from all over the world when they find a little skunk that they know she would like.

Mine would be rock crawler Jeeps. I love those things and some day in

the near future I’m going to build one to my liking. But it won’t be no ordinary Jeep. Oh no. It will have a roll cage, dual transfer cases, super articulated suspension and Unimog axles front and rear.

I’ll stop there because you may not have any idea what a Unimog is and why I would want axles from it. Suffice it to say that these axles are actually indestructible and would allow the Jeep to clear a boulder in the middle of the road at about 2 feet in diameter right underneath the center of the vehicle.

I’m getting too detailed here. That’s what happens when you start talking about something you really like,

you can go on and on forever.

That’s why places like MySpace and Facebook have become so important in Internet world. They are so important that Google is actually nervous about them-that’s why they bought YouTube, so they can have an inroads into the social bookmarking Internet sites.

These are what are termed as Web 2.0 and are really taking off in the world.

Why do I bring these up in this letter? What would be the purpose of discussing social bookmarking in a series of e-mails designed to improve your financial mental and spiritual lives?

Because we are social beings. We need to belong and feel part of a group and with Internet sites like these

we can find someone who has the exact same interests as we do. In fact we may find that there are hundreds or thousands of people that have similar interests.

Now let me ask you a question. Have you ever met a hermit? I mean a real one. One that lives out in the mountains all by themselves. Have you ever talked to them?

Well I have. In fact there was a time in my life that I thought it would be fun to be a hermit. I once took a trip on the Salmon River in Idaho with a group of college students. It was a five week camping trip and

a lot of fun. I had heard that there were some hermits that lived along the Salmon River and I wanted to meet them.

I have to say I was severely disappointed. They’re all total loony tunes. I mean they were crazy. They would seem normal for a few minutes and then just like a light switch, burst out in laughter or rage, running or screaming some obscenities and not caring in least what they said or who they offended.

For a moment I thought that I could be different. But then I realized something-these people were crazy because they made their own rules.

You may quickly dismiss that last sentence but I’m here to

tell you that it’s true. Oh sure, they may have been schizophrenic or had some other mental disease but the fact of the matter is, they had failed somewhere along the line to connect with other people and decided to go out on their own and live by their own rules.

Now I’m not a psychiatrist or psychologist or any other manner of “ist”, just a thinker and observer so don’t take what I’m saying too seriously, but that’s the lesson I learned. It actually prevented me from becoming a hermit and I’ve been grateful ever since.

But here’s the strange thing-without such social bookmarking sites we in essence all become hermits or at least can be.

In fact it’s affecting our school system today. Children are growing up in an online world with instant answers and unreal expectations.

Many of them don’t know how to look up something in the dictionary. They don’t know how to go to the library and look up a book using the Dewey decimal system. They want instant gratification without effort or struggle. If something is deemed too difficult it is abandoned.

And without actual personal contact with other human beings they get a distorted view of life. In these cases it might actually be dangerous to find people online with similar interests.

There’s even online churches that meet together whenever they wish. It’s an

interesting option to passing the plate but I can’t imagine achieving salvation in such a manner.

Where am I going with all this?

As in all things our lives must be kept in balance including our use of the Internet. I believe that when we stand before God and we are judged according to our actions we will be judged by the decisions we made. Many times it is not just a choice between good or bad but between good and good. What is the best use of our time? The choice between good and best can be sometimes difficult.

Use places like MySpace and Facebook and introduce yourself to the world so that people get

to know you. Find people of similar interest but don’t spend your whole life in such pursuits. Watch what your kids are doing on the Internet. Go outside and take a hike, fly a kite and see the sights.

Don’t be a hermit. You’ll never get rich that way, a least not socially.

Socially rich means you have lots of friends and money can never take their place.
